Cinematic Stories

Movies have come a long way within recent years. They have evolved from being colorless to having a person believe what they see is real. A movie is a series of still or moving images. It is produced by recording photographic images with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or visual effects. The process of filmmaking has developed into an art form and an industry. The visual elements of cinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication.

Movies express and create feelings. They can make the viewer laugh, feel sad or have a sudden outburst of happiness.

Discussion Questions:
1)From the information above do you believe movies can be considered art?
2) How do you think element and princples of art correlate to the films we watch today?
3)Have a movie you've watched triggered an emotion?

  1. To answer the first question, I believe that movies are a form of art. I believe it because that catch peoples attentions and use different mediums. They also make people believe in what they are seeing even if it is not actually there. In horror movies there is a special affect that makes people believe in something that is not there. Also, there are mediums used to make art and the movies use mediums like digital editing, cameras in general, also green screen special effects.

  2. What actions really personify's a movie? One of the most interesting and talked about parts of the short film for myself and most of the class is when Terreon fell while running away from the killer. I don't know about the rest of the class but the reason why this really peaked my interest is because there are certain stereotyped actions for a horror movie and that scene showed two of them in one. One of the stereotypical actions is a White or Caucasian woman falling while running from the killer and afterwards acting as if they can't get back up when their fine. The second stereotypical action of horror movies is that the Black or African American person must be one of the first to die if not the first. I found it interesting that Terreon felt that he needed to include both of these actions in his horror movie. Is it his creative voice or is he mearly mimicking the usual actions one would find in a horror movie?

I think movies are a form of art. I say this because art is a really controversial, broad, and subjective topic. There isn't really a definition of art because those who define it are different. What is art to one person may not be art to another. I think movies in general are a type of art because even though they aren't traditional, it takes just as much work to make them as a painting or sketch. Not only that, movies are a great way to bring artists of different forms together. They combine writers, actors, singers, dancers, set designers, costume, make up artists, hair designers, etc.

I saw many elements and principles, not in drawing necessarily, but there were a lot of them in the movie. I think there was lots of contrast from different lighting scenes. It was bright in one place and dark in another. There was definitely movement.

I movie I watched that never fails to trigger emotion is Napoleon Dynamite. It's great. c:

You did a really good job, Terreon. ^-^

  4. I really do think movies are a form of art. It takes a good immagination and mind to make a GOOD movie. You need to have a vision of what you want to show in your film. I thought the video was funny. I never thought of thinking that movies can be considered as art! but now I do.
