The world of Graffiti

As I was leaving a grocery store, I noticed a group of men and a female graffiti on a side of a store.  I was going to keep walking but, for one, I wanted to know how the picture was going to turn out. In addition, I wanted to know were they being paid to do this.  When they got done with the painting, I really liked how colorful it was however, I did not understand what the meaning of it was, or even what the picture was.

I walked up to this girl named Kate who told me she has been doing graffiti for 10 years and asked her, “Where they getting paid for this?” She simply said, “No, were not.” That confused me because if you not being paid to do it why waste your time using harmful can of paint with an unpleasant smell! She said, “Some do it for fun and because this is what they love to do. Others do it to express themselves and show their skills. And others like herself simply graffiti to get rid of pain that has happened in their childhood years by expressing it through their art.” That was not only interesting to me but also weird to me at the same time.

Discussion Questions
1. What are productive things you do to express yourself, or get rid of something?
2. Would you still do something if someone asked you to do something that you love to do even if you are not getting a reward for it?
3. Do you feel graffiti is a good way to express yourself and get a point across or is it just ignorance?

  1. I think graffiti is a good way to express yourself and get a point accross. I think it's only ignorance if you are dissing something, or graffiting profanity.

  2. For Discussion question number one, I'd like to say that I write poetry as a form of expression. It can help relieve stress or get things off your mind and chest. I liked this post because it shows how art can help people in emotional ways as well as in productive ways. (Saphire)

  3. One of the things that I do to express myself, or get rid of some bad feeling, is do poetry. I think that it's a creative/artistic way to express what you feel through figurative language and not directly. I strongly like the way taggers paint and like to express and reveal what they feel publically, even though, sometimes society judge them; some people think that they aren’t artists but vandals. I personally think that they are just expressing themselves, just as with poetry, but in a very modern way. I also believe that the respect that people have towards old artistic ways to communicate what each individual feels like, should be the same towards all these methods (such as graffiti)! It’s the XXI Century!

  4. i've never personally experienced or witnessed a work of art such as graffitti in the process but was this your first time ? Also, would you do something you like if you knew you weren't getting paid for it ? I feel that yes, there are several people out there who graffitti for ignorance and do it only for the reason of marking something up and calling it their own,but theres also people who do it because its something they love and a way to express themselves like an outlet rather than the way others do it which can sometimes result in violence.

  6. Well, I usually just play my games because when play my games I feel that I a completely new person and this allows me to express myself in a complete new way. Another way I express myself is by drawing because although I am not a great artist i would like to get there one day and they only way i can if by trying. I would most definitely do things that i take interest in even if i am not getting paid. I see this as my own free time and it helps me to relax and enjoy myself. Mainly I think of graffiti as art. To me all art is just a way to express yourself no matter how you incorporate your skills. There is a difference between art and vandalism because people who vandalize property does it for different reasons than just plain enjoyment.
