CTA Public Art ^-^

This colorful public art can be seen on the Pink line on 18th street and it was completed in 1998. It was done by the artist Francisco Mendoza who was also my elementary art teacher. But he did not do this on his own; he got the help of many of his student who were enlisted in Gallery 18, which is a satellite program of Gallery 37.  His purpose for doing this kind of art was to show the Mexican heritage and some of the cultural icons in Mexican history. This was different than other public art we’ve seen in class since the others have a humorous meaning behind it or they are head turning due to the abstract characteristic they have. This on the other hand is more like a symbol of the community which anyone can see just by going out and riding the train. ^-^

1)      What kind of public art do u like better? (Humorous, the kind that questions people’s morals, etc.? Why?

2)      Do you think this kind of public art is fair or unfair due to the fact that not only do Mexicans live in this area, but other nationalities as well?

3)      Is there any other CTA public art that you’ve seen that you particularly liked? Do you know the meaning behind it?

  2. I personally like the "parody" art because its taking old, boring, modern art-work and turning it into something more humorous, fun, and post modern. The art-work that question people's moral is cool to, because it makes a person think, and it could have many different meanings. But really I think any CTA public art is a good way to occupy the blank spaces in train stations and make it more live.

  3. The controversy that this cultural representation might create is really great. Though, I think is good to represent what the actual Mexican is based on, by this type of art. It represents the roots of the culture as a whole and it's complexity as well. Also, I think is really cool that all the community collaborated to do this project, which is representing the culture of a big part of the community, even though it has another cultures within the neighborhood. Though, I think that this mural representation of the Mexican culture is not saying that the neighborhood is ALL based on the Mexican community, but it's expressing the way a culture is. This type of art makes look a community colorful and vivid, and reflects certain cultural background, therefore, something new can be learned from it.

  4. The most public art I like is humorous because sometimes I just need to laugh and get things back together.I Don't think its unfair it's just that other people need to start trying to make art public so people can view it. I haven't seen any other cta public art but I think that people should try and make more of it.
