Tattoo Art & Culture

The word "tattoo" derived from the Tahitian word "tatau", which means "to mark something". Though it may not be known to many, the art of tattooing started over 5,000 years ago. Most people who get tattoos use them to express themselves. Its a way to symbolize and identify yourself with something that will be there forever. However, while most people look at tattoos as just a form of body art, others have more negative views on tattoos. There are certain jobs that wont even allow you to apply if you have visible tattoos. The controversy behind the meaning and purpose of tattoos goes on constantly, with valid points on each side. I chose to do this topic because I'm interested in tattoo art myself, and plan on getting more of them in the future.

- Do you think it's fair for jobs to make no visible tattoos a requirement?

-Why do you think this is a regulation?
- Do you think tattoos should be viewed as a form of art?

  1. I believe that the jobs that make no visible tattoos a requirement is in part right. If the tattoo is inappropriate then that would affect the company's reputation/image and therefore it should be put as a "policy". Also, a tattoo might not give an appearance of formality and professionalism in the whole term which in fact will ruin the opportunities to succeed of the company. On the other hand, a tattoo might be a part of yourself and part of your beliefs. I believe that the tattoo might be used as a way to manifest the way you feel or think, which is part of who you are. So it depends on what the tattoo is all about and the inner message that it has what “determines” if the tattoo is right to be visible or not.

  2. I do not believe that it is fair for jobs to make no visible tattoos a requirement because i believe it goes against the first admendent which is basically self freedom. But I thinks its a regulation because it interferes with the "professional environment". Some people to the the extreme and get facial tattoos. Its like casting a first impression. If you worked as a real estate agent, how could people take your profession seriously if you have a tattoo if fire on the side your face. Its like you have to give respect to get it in a way. People will not take you serious because the tattoo on your face isn't serious. I think tattoos are a form of art because by definition art is "any field using the skills or techniques of art: advertising art; industrial art" (dictionary.com).

  3. I believe that tattoos should be considered a form of art for a couple of reasons. The first one is because the different types of tattoos that somebody can make. For example having different characters or a drawing of one of their favorite pictures. Also since art most of the times has a meaning behind it. Tattoos are no exception, even if just a simple word or drawing it will symbolize something for the person that has it. Tattoos are like graffiti to me which is very debatable on whether it should be considered art or not>

  4. I do believe that tattoos should be considered a form of art. They are a way a person can express themselves. Whether it is just because they simply like the tattoo and feel connected to it, or because it actually has a story behind it the person is still expressing themselves. Art seems to be just that, to be able to express yourself without limit
Now, when it comes to if I think it's fair for jobs to make a regulation against showing tattoos, no, i don't think so. Some say it is because it will affect how a person sees you at work but why should your professionalism be affected by your tattoo? Just because you have tattoos doesn't mean you are not hardworking, proffesional or responsible. I think that instead of the tattoos being viewed as taboo, they should be seen as stories each person has.

  5. I think it is fair for jobs to regulate that tattoos must not be visible in order to apply/work in a job. It shows professional-ism to the employees, customers, and managers. It gives a sense of that the working force does not go out of their way in order to demean their own body.

  6. I think that some tattoos can be a way to express yourself. I don’t think that jobs should have a regulation on if an employee should cover her/his tattoo. Like I said, tattoos can be a representation of who some one is and how they like to express themselves. Some tattoos can have a nice message behind them. I’ve seen tattoos that are names, pictures, symbols, and words to describe people that are special to them. Since a tattoo is forever (unless you decide to remove it) people might have thought of the meaning before putting on their skin permanently. But if the person puts an “inappropriate” tattoo, then it was THEIR choice to put it on their body. That could show a person how that person really is.

  7. I think it's only fair that jobs make "no visible tattoos" a requirement if the tattoo is going against a religion, has something to do with a gang, or could cause a problem at the job. If it's not bothering anyone or inappropriate then it should be okay.

  8. I think tattoo should be viewed as a way of art, because tattoo is basically another way to express yourself. Although, some people tattoos may be to you a form of ignorance and stupidity, a lot of people get tattoos to express themselves and their emotions towards something. For instance, when I get older I want my first tattoo to be of Jesus on my arm. I'm getting the tattoo to not only show how strong I feel about Jesus, but how i feel connected to him as well. But overall, I think tattoos are just another form of art, and should be looked at by others as another form of art.
