Art through Hairstyles

Art can be expressed in many ways. But..have you ever thought through hair? Most styles started in the 1920's to symbolize something. The bobbed and waved hairstyle symbolized the growing freedom of women. But today hairstyles are mostly just to show off. In the 1950's that's really when hairstyles "took off" with the Doe Eye, D.A. and Mop tops. In the 1960's many African Americans wore the afro to symbolize black pride. In the 1980's that's when you see the spike hair, Jheri curls, mohawks, and small braids. Today you see color in hair, mohawks, designs in haircuts, twists, bangs, braids, bowls, etc.

Questions:
1. Do you think hairstyles are really art? why or why not?

2. Do you either support the fact that artist are born with natural talent or should still go to school for arts?

3. Have your hair ever been designed in one of these ways? What did you have?

  1. Designs can be considered an art form. This requires you to be Skilled and have a steady hand. Doing a design I someones head is like darawing on a piece of paper. The same concept is used just different equipment.

  2. Yes I think hairstyles are a form of art because it requires skill. If you think about it your hair is like a blank, your barber is like an artist, and his clippers are his tools. This relates to an episode of "A.n.t. Farm" that I saw when their art ant was doing hairstyles and a girl asked how was we doing it, then the star of the show responded with "His talent is art and hair is just another medium for him to use."

  3. I believe hairstyles can be a type of art because it lead to many different styles, just like in painting art when the designs are completely distinct from each other. Creating a design in the area of hair is quite unique because not many people are capable of doing such an art. I'm more of drawing on paper, but people that use techniques to create art designs not on paper is impressive, and for sure is an amazing form of art. I kind of support the fact that artist are born with natural talent and those are probably the people that will get notice first. Going to school for arts just improve your skills or help you excel your skills.

  4. I think hairstyles are a type of art because of the time, creativity and ambition that's put into it. When doing graffics, its not like you can erase it and redo it. It takes time and one wrong move can mess up the art within. Also hair styles also a an art form because like graffics takes time and you have to be able to create it. Its a talent that not everyone can do or pull off. Some even go to school just to master such skill.

  5. 2. Some people have natural talents, because they were born with certain outstanding qualities. However, I really believe that to develop completely such characteristics, its important to go to a school or some type of place that helps to develop it completely. Also, someone might ignore such talent and trying something new might help to notice and develop also that quality. I sincereily beleive that dedication is the clue for success and it´s really important to do what you want to get. Plus, school is a place where you cannot just practice something and become good at it, but its also a place where you can learn and develop new talents-- discover new facts and qualities of yourself and develop them as well.

  6. I think hair can reallyy be art because it takes a really good hair designer to put a specific design in a persons head. It takes time and traing to actually learn how to make designs in people hair and make it look worth something. I think that artists can be born with the talent of doing drawing because if you know how to draw its from dodoling on paper when your little. When. Your in school they only give you tips on to make what you already know better.
