Live Love Poetry

Poetry is a form of  literary art that gives people the outlet to express their feelings and soul. To me poetry is a of art that can be shown without having to put it on a canvas, or sculpt it out of clay. The power of words, and feelings you express through your voice can be your strongest weapon. Poetry, over time has formed so many different forms of itself, from haikus to rhyming to not rhyming at all. Yes, there are templates and guidelines to writing poetry, but truly all poetry is free spirited. For many years great poets like Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, and Edgar Allen Poe has used poetry to let the world feel how they feel. I think that poetry is the strongest form of performing arts because its the actions of someone else's feelings becoming your own.

Questions:
What is your take on poetry?
Have you ever read any pieces of poetry that inspired/touched you?
Do you consider poetry to be a form of art?

  1. I really liked this presentation because I never really liked poetry to begin with, only simple rhymes by Shel Silverstein, but Mauria's presentation kind of helped me see poetry can be fun as well as powerful. The presentation was really well done, and I think it was an effective way to get a point across.
In class we discussed whether or not poetry was the most powerful form of performing arts, and I have to say I disagree. Though I think it is very powerful, I do not think it is the most powerful. However, if it comes down to inspiring me or conveying feelings, the piece of poetry did just that.
I don't think I'll ever be a poet because of this, but now I respect poetry a little more. I think it's great that normal everyday people can have much of a voice through poetry as big city writers. I also like that poets that are down-to-earth can touch on topics that aren't just whimsical and flippant. Poets can discuss socio-political problems, what is wrong with the school system, and everything that is usually kept from civilians.
I think it was a really good presentation. (:

  2. I think poetry can be considered an art because it takes practice to perfect and not every one can do it. All forms of art express feeling and the creators emotion in some type of way. I enjoyed the video presentation because it showed me that poetry is more than just rhyming each line. But telling the story of the author while displaying a deeper meaning

  3. Do I consider poetry as art? Well shyea I do! It might not be the “obvious” art type out there, but it is a different way to make art, verbally. A lot of art is done with materials and objects people can see. Sure a paper is visual, but it is not as strong as when someone says the poem. I like poetry because sometimes the meaning isn’t easily viewed or found. You have to dig deep, and find the meaning of how the author is trying to show her/his viewers. Poetry can also help find inspiration for other types of art. Like music. Isn’t music just another way of poetry(unless it’s Rebecca Black’s Friday song)? Art is about showing how you feel, doing something you like, and you can put that in words.

  4. Poetry to me is something that shows more feeling and personal life expierence. I havent actually read any poetry that actually inspired me but I'm sure that some will. I consider poetry to be a form of art because no matter the form of art it all shows emotion of the artists. From time to time everyone has their way to express the way they feel with words , pictures, or symbols. Everything that people do around the world can be decribe as a piece of art. Poetry is the easiest way to get all your problems on paper in this time period.

  5. A piece of poetry that inspired me is "Two Roads Diverged In a Yellow Wood" by Robert Frost. This particular poem inspired and continues to inspire me to this day because it shows that one decision can alter the course of your whole life, that sometimes you can't go back on a decision once you've made it, and that taking the harder and less traveled road can make all the difference(part of the poem). This poem inspires me too do my best and to not take the easy way out of everything.
